Komla Dumor dies from cardiac arrest (Updated)

The presenter of the Focus of Africa programme on BBC died, Saturday morning in London after a short illness Myjoyonline.com has learnt.

Former CEO OF Kumasi Asante Kotoko Herbert Mensah confirmed the death in an interview with Joy News.

His wife is a neighbour to Dumor in London and was present when the doctors pronounced the BBC presenter dead.

Mensah would not give any further details on the circumstances surrounding the death except to add that Esther Cobbah, head of Stratcomm Africa, and a friend to the Dumor family has been  appointed to speak on the family’s behalf.

Komla Dumor was on set Friday evening when he hosted the BBC Focus of Africa programme. It was to be his last.

He was only last week nominated to be the face of the BBC for the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

The ace Ghanaian journalist, 2003 winner of the GJA Journalist of the year, hosted the Joy FM Super Morning Show for ten years before proceeding to the BBC in 2006 where he hosted a number of programmes including the BBC World News , Focus on Africa , Network Africa.

He was the only West African news reader on the BBC World news until his death.

Dumor achieved his feat in journalism without a journalism background.

He studied medicine but he changed course and graduated from the University of Ghana with a BSc in Sociology and Psychology and from Harvard University with an MA in Public Administration.

His unique voice, passion, and an incredible attention to detail catapulted him to higher heights in journalism.

He had interviewed some of the greatest world leaders, including former US president Bill Clinton, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
He was married to Kwansema Dumor, with whom he had three children.
He was 41.

Popular Ghanaian Journalist Komla Dumor is reported dead after suffering from a cardiac arrest.

Komla Dumor who works as a Broadcast Journalist with the BBC World Service Radio/ BBC World Television and presenter of BBC Africa is reported to have died in London Saturday morning.

Komla Dumor was born on 3 October 1972 in Accra, Ghana.
His grandfather was Philip Gbeho, composer of the Ghanaian national anthem.

As of June 2012, Dumor was the main presenter of the BBC World News programme Focus on Africa .

Dumor joined the BBC African Service in 2006 as host of the radio programme Network Africa . From 2008 to 2012 he presented The World Today on the BBC World Service.

In 2011 Dumor began presenting the World News and Africa Business Report on BBC World News television.
When the latter was relaunched in 2013; fellow BBC correspondent, Lerato Mbele was chosen as host.

Prior to joining the BBC he worked for JOY FM in Accra, Ghana, and was the 2003 winner of Journalist of the Year award given by the Ghana Journalist Association.

Dumor is the only West African news reader on BBC World News.

National Theatre closed down for maintenance.


The National Theatre of Ghana has been closed temporarily till January 30 for scheduled maintenance works, Mr Welbeck Tamakloe, the Assistant Estate Manager told the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday.

The minor works would include vacuuming, overhauling, painting and other face-lifting groundwork to keep the facility in good condition.

Mr Tamakloe explained that the yearly maintenance would also involve repairing and replacement of old equipment, changing of worn-out carpets and improvement of the interior décor.

“Art and entertainment is about creativity and to maintain our accolade as the citadel of theatre, we must always keep the place attractive,” Mr Tamakloe stated.

The GNA observed that workers of the theatre were busily scrubbing the floor, servicing machines and clearing the stage.

Mr William Ashong, the General Stage Manager said the team was currently cleaning the back stage and will later polish the stage for artistic effect during performances.

The National Theatre was built through a technical co-operation Agreement signed on September 18, 1985 in Beijing between the Governments of the Republic of Ghana and the People's Republic of China.

The construction of the Theatre was completed on December 20, 1992 and currently houses resident performing companies; namely the National Dance Company, National Theatre Players (Abibigromma) and the National Symphony Orchestra.

It also has
youth groups such as the Dance Factory, Indigen Afrika and the Vision Band.

The elegant and imposing National Theatre has a complicated construction moulding and novel exterior features and has served as an ideal place for events such as Conferences, Seminars, Awards night,Workshops, Artistic Presentations, Receptions, General Meetings, and Parties with an uninterrupted supply of electricity.
